Moving large plants, even without a car
Water, wrap, protect from the cold: how a large houseplant survives the move.
Preparation
- Water one to two days before. The root ball stays moist, the pot doesn't get unnecessarily heavy and nothing drips.
- Secure the pot. Put it in a crate or bucket and stuff newspaper into the gaps so it doesn't tip over.
- Cover the soil. A piece of cardboard or film around the stem stops soil from falling out.
- Loosely tie the shoots together. With a soft band or strip of fabric, never with wire. That way long leaves won't snap on door frames.
- Measure the height including the pot and weigh it. You need both for the booking.
Cold and heat
Many houseplants come from the tropics. Below about 10 degrees they are quickly damaged, and frost does harm within minutes. In autumn and winter, wrap them in packing paper or garden fleece.
In summer the problem is the opposite: a parked car in the sun turns into an oven. Never leave the plant waiting in the car.
Without a car
Small plants can go on the bus in a bag or crate. Large plants in tubs quickly weigh 15 to 30 kg and are bulky. Then having them delivered is easier.
- Large (L): up to 40 kg, fits in 120 × 80 × 60 cm, so usually up to about 120 cm tall including the pot.
- Bulky (XL): over 40 kg, e.g. a large tub, very tall plants or several tubs at once. Then we come as a team of two, depending on the dimensions with a cargo bike and Zemmi trailer or with the electric van.
After the move
Put the plant in a bright spot out of direct sun and leave it alone for a few days. A few yellow leaves after a move are normal. Don't repot or fertilise straight away.
